Podcast Discussion Questions

To Kill a Mockingbird Ch. 1-5 Questions for podcast discussion

Concept:
Discuss how the various locations in which the events of the first five chapters occur allow the reader to be exposed to the characters and various conflicts in the story.

Concept: Maycomb operates on a sort of caste system. That is, the family a person is born into determines the expectation for how that person is to act, what they will do for a living, etc. It also establishes how well respected they will be in the community. What evidence do you see of this caste system?

Concept:
Why do you suppose Lee chooses for Scout to have such a hard time on her first day of school? What is she setting us up for?

The Parts of the Whole

What is a plot? In the context of a story, it is the sequence of related events.

In the story of the world, the people who influence the plot of our collective history an be thought of as characters. We studied biographies of people who had an impact on the 20th century. I have been impressing upon you the idea that all of these people can be shown to be connected in some way. Think of it as a sort of six degrees of separation for historical figures.

In the coming week we'll be making connections. That's all I'm going to say for now.
